Those who compare my father to Messi don’t understand what football is, says Maradona’s son

Diego Maradona Jr. insisted that those who make comparisons between his father and Lionel Messi “don’t understand football”

Argentina’s 36-game unbeaten run was snapped when Saudi Arabia managed to upset Lionel Scaloni’s side by beating them 2-1 in Argentina’s first World Cup group game. Although Messi started by scoring a goal from the penalty spot, he failed to make an impact in this match and failed to save the Albiceleste from a painful defeat.

The son of the Maradona icon has spoken about Messi after this result, saying that he is not even close to the level of his late father.

“I am saddened by Argentina’s loss. I still can’t believe this happened. Losing to Saudi Arabia is crazy,” said Maradona Jr. for Radio Marte. “The comparisons that are made between Messi and my father are those who do not see and do not understand football. We are talking about two different planets”, said Maradona Jr.

Maradona Jr. however, he dismissed the opinion that Messi and Argentina took this easy opponent in this big competition. “I don’t want to put the burden on Lionel for this,” he added. “Sometimes in football you lose against a weak opponent. I don’t think Argentina was arrogant in this match. Football is like that, if you don’t end the match against weak teams early, they will succeed in the end”.

Scaloni’s side will be aiming to bounce back from this shock defeat when they face Mexico this Saturday.
