The World Cup is not waiting for Ronaldo

Former Serie A defender Daniele Adani believes Fernando Santos was right to leave Cristiano Ronaldo out of Portugal’s starting line-up against Switzerland. The world cup waits for no one.

The former Juventus striker was not in the starting line-up for the World Cup round of 16 match between Portugal and Switzerland that took place on Tuesday night. His fellow players didn’t miss him too much after they outclassed Switzerland by winning 6-1, thus securing a place in the quarter-finals where they will face Morocco.

Ronaldo entered the game in the second half together with the Milan striker, Rafael Leao, but until the red and black star scored, CR7 did not manage to change his personal figures with goals in the World Cup.

He actually scored, but his goal was disallowed for offside.

“The World Cup is the most important football tournament and it doesn’t wait for anyone, not even Ronaldo,” said Adani, a former Fiorentina and Inter defender who is now an analyst at Rai Sport.

“Ronaldo can be good in 20 minutes as he can no longer play the whole game at this level, showing his true commitment.”

Adani has become one of the most famous analysts in Italy, especially because of his frequent debate with Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri that he had in 2019.

He made 192 Serie A appearances and 154 Serie B appearances during his playing career and played five games for Italy.
