Osimhen wins the best African player award for 2023

Victor Osimhen has been named “Player of the Year” by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for 2023, largely thanks to his role in Napoli’s 2022/23 Serie A title win.

The Nigerian saw off competition from Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Paris Saint-Germain’s Achraf Hakimi and Al-Nassr’s Sadio Mane.

The ceremony to announce the best from CAF was held tonight.

Osimhen becomes the first Nigerian player to win the award since Arsenal’s Nwankwo Kanu in 1999, and is also the first active Serie A player to be crowned African Player of the Year since Samuel Eto’o when he was at Inter in the year 2010.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a calendar year full of personal and team achievements, the most important of which was the Serie A title last season.

During the title winning season, Osimhen scored 26 league goals from 32 appearances in total.

Furthermore, he also registered five goals in six games in Napoli’s way to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Victor Osimhen was in Morocco himself tonight to receive the award on Monday evening, having been given a day off from training with Napoli to attend the ceremony.
