Eight years of disappointment for Messi in the Champions League

When Lionel Messi lifted the Champions League trophy, his fourth of his career, in 2015 at Berlin’s Olympiastadion, everyone thought he would soon become the most prolific player of all time in Europe’s biggest competition of football, surpassing the record of six trophies won by Paco Gento.

However, the Argentine star has remained in the quota of 4 Champions Leagues won and the last time he won it against Juventus, before a series of disappointments.

Eight straight eliminations, from 2016 until last night, three times in a row in the last eight, which does not fit the profile of the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner at all.

What is worrying is that in the eight return games, the former Barcelona player has scored only one goal and has never managed to make a decisive assist.

A black journey for the Paris Saint-Germain footballer, started in 2016 against Atletico Madrid, to continue against Juventus, Roma, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and now again against Bayern.

So, in the last two seasons, Messi has been eliminated from the Champions League in the round of 16.

Leo Messi was quite successful with Argentina in the World Cup, but with PSG in Europe he is not doing well.
