Hans Flik, a successful former coach of Bayern, was reportedly planning a surprise comeback to Sabener Strase. However, the plans were derailed and a U-turn resulted from an internal power struggle. The coach who guided Bayern Munich to a historic victory in 2020, Hans Flik, seemed prepared to rejoin the German record holders.
There were specific considerations for the successful coach’s return to the Allianz Arena after the 59-year-old resigned as national coach in the summer of 2023. “Kicker” claims that at the start of the year, Flik had a formal request from Bayern. Even a one-year contract was agreed upon, and talks about season preparation were already scheduled with Max Eberl, the sporting director at the time. Hansi’s concept would benefit the Munich giants by allowing them to track changes in the coaching market for a year while also bridging the gap following a potential exit from Tomas Tuhel.
But Eberl’s internal attitude caused the scheme to fail. The sporting director worked in the background to recruit Vincent Kompany, which ultimately happened, and was never a strong advocate of bringing Flik back. On Wednesday, when they “clash” with the Bavarians in the Champions League, Flik will have the opportunity to prove Eberl and Bayern wrong.
