Barcelona have set their sights on Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan, who they intend to sign for free when his contract expires at the end of the season
Barcelona has shown “serious interest” in taking Gundogan from City at the end of the season, with the midfielder’s contract expected to expire. The report states that the club are looking to strengthen their midfield with a free transfer, while they consider that N’Golo Kante is no longer a target as he is due to sign a new contract with Chelsea.
La Blaugrana are still tight financially after several years of spending and coach Xavi wants to reach an agreement with Bosman for him. Hopes of them signing 32-year-old Gundogan hinge on whether or not he extends his contract at City, the club he has played for since 2016 – Pep Guardiola’s first signing as City manager.
The German midfielder has been a focal point for City since joining the club and taking over the captaincy following the departure of Fernandinho last summer, but he has not shied away from talk that he will be looking for a new challenge.
A move to Barcelona, which does not have the same credentials as it once did, would be a remarkable step for Gundogan as he enters the tail end of his career. But for now he is determined to help City return to the top of the table, while admitting that something is not right in the squad.
