Jurgen Klopp has praised the “massive strides” Darwin Nunez has made at Liverpool, with the forward costing Liverpool more than the €70 million he has started to score.
The Uruguayan was bought by the Reds from Benfica for a big money transfer in the summer of 2022. He has scored 15 goals in his first season in England, but has also missed a lot of scoring opportunities, leading Klopp to question the money he paid for him.
Nunez started the new season on the bench, but he managed to score twice in Newcastle’s dramatic win and has now scored in back-to-back games against LASK and West Ham – with a volley in the 3- 1 to the Hammers after a good pass he received from Alexis Mac Allister.
“He has made great strides in recent weeks,” Klopp told reporters while showing what has changed for Nunez during the 2023/24 season.
“He is a threat now. You saw the goal, it was very good, right? It was really strong.”.
“The defensive work he does, that’s the main difference. He always did these, but he was less coordinated. It’s much better now, we’ve found a way around it. Jones, Szoboszlai are helping him there, and they are very well organized. Very well, absolutely.”
Liverpool are expected to return to action on Wednesday when they take on Leicester in the third round of the League Cup, before traveling to Tottenham next weekend for another tough test as they sit just two points clear of them in the Premier League.
