Virgil van Dijk, the new captain of Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk has been appointed as the new captain of Liverpool, following the departure of Jordan Henderson.

The English club announced this Monday that from next season the captain’s armband will belong to the Dutch defender.

Virgil van Dijk is also the captain of the Dutch national team.

Meanwhile, after the departure of James Milner, Trent Alexander-Arnold has been appointed vice-captain.

“It’s a really proud day for me, for my wife, for my children, for my family. It was a special feeling and I can’t describe it at this point. But it’s something I’m really proud of,” van Dijk told the English club’s official website.

“Obviously I’m captain of the Netherlands, this was already a great honor, a proud moment as well. But even captaining Liverpool Football Club is something I can’t describe at this point. It is something that makes me very proud and I will do everything in my power and what I can do to make everyone proud and happy with me and the football club,” he added.

Van Dijk has made a total of 222 appearances for Liverpool since he moved to Anfield from Southampton in January 2018.

During this period, the 32-year-old has collected seven winners’ medals as he helped the Reds lift the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, European Super Cup, Club World Cup and FA Super Cup.
