Spain legend Sergio Ramos has announced his retirement from the national team after making 180 appearances for the Red Storm.
The 36-year-old has had a long career with the National Team, approximately 18 years. Ramos was part of the Spain squad that won the World Cup for the first time in 2010, which came in between two European titles in 2008 and 2012. After retiring from the national team, the defender wanted to give a thank you “from the depth of the heart” for his fans.
“This time has come, the time for me to say goodbye to the Spanish National Team,” said the statement from Ramos. “This morning, I received a call from the current coach who informed me that I am not part of his plans, regardless of how he plays or what I do in my career. With all my heart, it is the end of a path that I hoped to extend and which I would have finished better,” he said.
“I honestly believed that this era deserved an end because my performances are not up to the level for the National Team. Because age is not a virtue or a defect” is just a number unrelated to performance or ability. I adore footballers like Modric, Messi and Pepe who are playing today. Unfortunately, this does not apply to me because football is not always fair and football is never football.”
“Come here with unforgettable memories, all the titles we have fought for and celebrated together with great pride and I feel like one of the most trophy-winning Spaniards of all time. This symbol, this jersey and these fans, all of you, have made me happy. My heartfelt thanks to all of you who believe in me,” he added.
With the end of his career coming to an end, the Spaniard will now focus on his career with Paris Saint-Germain, who play against Marseille on Sunday.
