Lloris leaves the national team

The goalkeeper of France, Hugo Lloris has announced that he has retired from the National Team after the 2022 World Cup.

Lloris has confirmed that he has retired from international football after more than 14 years of playing for the French national team. The goalkeeper won the 2018 World Cup with Les Bleus and the Nations League in the 2020/21 season. He also captained the team in the final of France in Qatar 2022, where the French lost on penalties to Argentina.

Lloris leaves France as the most capped player for France, having played 145 games in his career for the Roosters. The captain gave the news during an interview where he indicated that the goalkeeper of AC Milan, Mike Maignan will replace him in the national team.

“There comes a moment when you have to know how to hand over the task to someone else,” he said in this interview for L’Equipe. “I don’t want to make it mine, I have always said and I repeat that France is a team that does not belong to anyone and we must all ensure that it belongs to everyone, I am the first such. I think that even after me, the team is ready to continue and there is a goalkeeper who is ready and that is Maignan”.

The 36-year-old also admitted that he took into consideration the family’s opinions about his decision to retire from the national team.

“I’d rather quit when I’m at my peak now than wait for my speed to slow down and I’m no longer a racer,” he added. “This was also a family decision, I feel that I need to spend more time with my wife and my children.”

Coach Didier Deschamps must now decide who will succeed Lloris as the number 1 goalkeeper in gate. Les Bleus return to action on March 24 against the Netherlands in a Euro 2024 qualifier.
