Pele praises Weah for his goal against Wales

The legendary striker wrote to him on Instagram

The goal that tied the USA 1-1 at the World Cup in the first game of the World Cup not only helped the USA get a point early in the tournament but also caught the eye of one of soccer’s greatest legends, Pele.

After the match, Weah posted his goal on Instagram with the message “mixed emotions”. “This goal was for the USA, it was for Liberia, it was for Jamaica, it was for my family,” he added.

He was congratulated by his teammates and the King

Several of Weah’s teammates and former US players congratulated him, including Antonee Robinson and DeAndre Yedlin, as well as former striker Jozy Altidore and Eddie Johnson. Even his teammates from Lile and Rafael Leao congratulated him, as did striker Moise Kean, but also Kosovar Edon Zhegrova.

But there was one comment that stood out among all the comments made to the 22-year-old, and it was Pele’s.

“Congratulations! It was a beautiful goal,” wrote Pele. “Keep dreaming, dreams come true.”

He immediately responded to the legendary footballer.

“Thank you Papa Pele,” Weah wrote. “It is a blessing and an honor to receive such an inspiring message from the King himself! Thank you for all you have done for the world and for us young people of color. Big hugs.”

In fact, the last player to score against Wales in a World Cup was Pele in the World Cup quarter-finals in 1958. Since then, Wales have failed to reach a World Cup.

The USA’s next game is on Friday, Nov. 25, against a powerhouse England team, who trounced Iran 6-2.
